History

V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National UniversityJanuary 17, 1805: the Decree on Opening of the Imperial University in Kharkiv came into force. It was the second university in the South of the Russian Empire. It was founded on the initiative of the local community with Vasyl Karazin at the fore, whose idea was supported by the nobility and the local authorities. Count Severin Pototski was appointed the first supervisor of the university, the first rector becoming the philologist Ivan Ryzhski. 1820—1850: for a certain period of time, the University of Kharkiv was autonomous with the rector being elected, however, in this period all its activity was strictly controlled (rectors were appointed by the Minister of Education), scientific publications and the academic process were censored. 1863: according to the new Statute, the university became partly autonomous. In the 19th — beginning of the 20th century, the University of Kharkiv had 4 schools: School of Physics and Mathematics, School of History and Philology, School of Medicine, School of Law. 1839: A veterinary school, which later (1851) became an independent institute, was established within the university, At this time, the university structure also included laboratories, clinics, an astronomical observatory, a botanical garden, and a library. In 1811, the Philotechnical Society was founded; the Mathematical Society of Kharkiv, the Historical and Philological Society of Kharkiv, the Naturalists Society, Societies of Physics, Chemistry, Law, etc. were established in the second half of the 19th century.

V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University1917—1920: There was a struggle between advocates of Russian statehood and the Ukrainian course. Some of the professors who opposed new political realities left the university. Most of the Ukrainian professors remained in Kharkiv. They continued working in the institutions founded by the Soviet government: the Academy of Theoretical Knowledge (1920—1921), Kharkiv Institute of Public Education (KhIPE, 1921—1930), Kharkiv Institute of National Economy, Institute of Physics and Chemistry, and Institute of Law. Kharkiv State University, consisting of 7 schools: School of Physics and Mathematics, School of Chemistry, School of Biology, School of Geology and Geography, School of Literature and Linguistics (with Department of Philosophy), and School of Economy (with Department of Economic Geography) was restored on their basis in 1932—1933. In V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University1936, the KhDU was named after the late Russian writer Maxim Gorky (though the latter was not related to the university during his life). During the German-Soviet war the KhDU was evacuated to the city of Kizilord in Kazakhstan, where it merged with the Kiev University forming the United Ukrainian State University. In 1943—1944, the KhDU returned to Kharkiv (the first academic year after the liberation of the city started on November 1, 1943). 1951 800 university students suffered from persecution in 1951 after they refused to pass exams in Russian. Court trials were held behind closed doors. 1921: Kharkiv Medical Institute was founded based on the School of Medicine of the University of Kharkiv. 1936: the university was named after the late Russian writer Maxim Gorky. 1977: the following schools were operating within the University: School of Mechanics and Mathematics, School of Physics, School of Geology and Geography, School of Economy, School of History, School of Philology, School of Foreign Languages, School of General Sciences, School of Correspondence Learning, and Night School.

After Independent Ukraine

October 11, 1999: President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma issued a decree, in which he, “taking into consideration considerable contribution that Kharkiv State University made to training qualified specialists and to development of science” granted the status of a national university and named it after its founder – Vasyl Nazarovych Karazin 2004: the University was given a twin building (former Govorov Academy), located opposite Svobody square.

The University was founded in 1805, a decree about its foundation was signed by the Russian Tsar Alexander I, and the first Statutes of the University were approved at that time.

In the 19th century, widely known doctors and scientists taught at the medical faculty of the university and worked in practical medicine. It was them who, for the first time in the Russian Empire, performed operations of ovariotomy, total resection of the stomach, operations on the open heart, as well as made significant scientific discoveries. In 1887, a special building was erected for the anatomical theatre of the Medical Faculty (now it houses the Department of Human Anatomy of our higher school); in 1896, four independent University clinics were built, namely: therapeutic, surgical, obstetrical and ophthalmological.

Kharkiv State Medical UniversityIn 1910, the Kharkov Medical Society, which was created on the initiative of professors of the Medical faculty, founded the Women’s Medical Institute, where higher education was given to women.

In 1920 the Medical Faculty of Kharkov University was united with the Women’s Medical Institute, and Kharkov Medical Academy was founded; one year later the latter was given another name: Kharkov Medical Institute. Among its teachers there were a lot of outstanding pedagogues and scientists; streets of the City of Kharkov were named after some of them. These are: physiologist Danilevsky V.Ya., surgeon Trinkler N.P., anatomist Vorobyov V.P., ophthalmologist Girschman L.L., therapeutist Frankovsky V.A.

Many research institutes, hospitals and clinics were founded on initiatives of lecturers of KNMU. These are, in particular, the Institute of General and Emergency Surgery, Malaya Institute of Therapy, Shapoval Regional Clinical Centre of Urology and Nephrology, etc. They became the basis for scientific and medical work of our University Departments in these fields.

In 1951, the University started training of foreign students. By now, the University has trained more than 3,600 specialists for different countries of the world.

In 1994, by a Decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Kharkov Medical Institute served as the basis for founding Kharkiv State Medical University; the latter received the highest 4th category by results of its accreditation and fully justifies it today. In 2007 our University received the National status.

Medicine is the science and art of healing. It encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness.

Contemporary medicine applies health science, biomedical research, and medical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through medication, surgery, or some other form of therapy. The word medicine is derived from the Latin arts medicine, meaning the art of healing.

This is an exciting time in medicine as we look forward to developing new avenues in health care excellence. The practice of medicine remains one of the most satisfying of all professions and we believe that the Lugansk State Medical University is an ideal place to earn your medical education.

We believe students are enrolling in Lugansk State Medical University for the right reasons-they want to provide care for people and they feel that as physicians they can make a difference in their communities. For that reason, we have great faith that health care delivery in our nation has a bright future.

The Lugansk State Medical University is known nationally for its many innovative teaching, clinical training and research programs. Our award-winning faculty members constantly strive for innovation and excellence in the classroom, the laboratory and the clinic. Because the class size is relatively small, our faculty members get to know each student. It is one thing to say the University has terrific people and programs and another to prove it.
